Turmeric Export
In 2006-07, turmeric exports increased from 51,500 tonnes at Rs 164.80 crores as beside 46,405 tonnes valued at Rs 152 crores in 2005-06.
Exports to Iran have increased from 1447 tonnes in 2005-06 to 6095 tonnes in 2006-07. India also improved its exports to Egypt from 1065 tonnes to 2057 tonnes in the same period.
The most sought after exports from India are dry turmeric, turmeric powder and oleoresin. In terms of capacities, turmeric oleoresin exports accounts for 200 tonnes per annum. Comparatively, turmeric powder constitutes a very small portion.

The chief quality of turmeric is called as Rajapuri which is cultivated in Sangli, Maharashtra. Masala producers mainly use it owed to its saffron colour. The second key quality is Salem Gattha that is cultivated in Salem, Tamilnadu and that is why its name is pronounced as Salem Gattha. Rajapuri Quality is a famous quality. And it appeals the Masala manufacturer besides the Salem variety. However production of this quality is low at ~2lakh bags. Both Rajapuri and Salem quality make higher prices.
Third quality is manufactured in Messur, Karnataka and is called as Godal Patte and that is measured lesser in quality to the former 2. The fourth quality – the Finger quality gets its name from its figure – which appears like human finger. Main producing states are AP, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra. Karnataka, Meghalaya, Orissa, Bihar and Assam are the main turmeric export producing areas. Moreover, Erode, Selam and Rajapur are the chief trading place. Other producing countries are Myanmar and China.
Within the country, Andhra Pradesh leads in the manufacture of turmeric, meeting an average of 55-57% of the total production.
